11 May - Early Plantings & Strawberries

We are nearly two weeks into May so here's a quick update on what's going on at the plot. The Brussels Sprouts and Summer cabbages have been planted out under nets and are already benefiting from the move. They are looking green and large.

The radish and lettuce are also doing well. I've lost a few lettuce to slugs so have had to resort to pellets to protect the rest. This year I'm growing Mazur lettuce and French Breakfast radish.

The early potatoes, Rocket, are all up now and I can't see any spaces in the lines. I buried them fairly deeply and have mounded up over the top too quite a few times so they are well covered. Still, they have finally shown now and they look green and healthy - let's hope I get a good crop in a month's time.

The strawberry plants always fascinate me, every season. At the end of April they look limp, unhealthy and generally pathetic after a Winter's worth of cold weather. Then, in the space of a fortnight, they go a lovely green, bush up and burst into flower. I've weeded all around them and thinned the rows a little, taking out any extra rogue runners - a sprinkle of fertilizer around the base of each plant gives them a real boost. There should be strawberries forming on them in the next few weeks.

Well, that's it for this quick update. Next time I'll be looking at the beans and squash. Bye for now.
